  • They are ridiculously overpowered trains at 2200hp for a three car set. They often have only one engine running out of the three available.

  • If they often have only one engine running then that does not make them overpowered. If all three engines were working then yes! I can think of a lot more trains that are ridiculously overpowered, 180s, 222s etc. That's mainly due to the amount of engines

  • @strange6 They generally only have one engine working when they are idling or have no need for them to be running. The unit automatically switches them off in order to preserve fuel. Its not uncommon to see a unit standing at a station with only one engine active till it departs.

  • amazing

  • The weight restrictions were sorted a while ago. 170s are used on Cleethorpes services as passenger numbers between Manchester and Leeds seem to have skyrocketed. 170s are ideal for the route to Cleethorpes. On Sundays I don't think Transpennine run any services to Hull, so 170s instead run to York with 185s working to Cleethorpes

  • @Woolybak8 The weight restrictions between Selby and Hull must have been sorted now. And I'm not sure why 170's are on Cleethorpes services now, on late-night Sundays they're even used on York services?

  • Aye, but as Sam says he sees them on his travels in 'Scotland'. 185s are now used on Hull diagrams aswell, as some Cleethorpes diagrams are now 170s

  • @Woolybak8 As well as all TransPennine routes, including Newcastle, Scarborough, Middlesbrough, Cleethorpes, Blackpool, Windermere and Barrow-in-Furness :) only 7 or 8 Edinburgh/Glasgow diagrams a day. The 185's aren't used on Hull services due to weight restrictions between Selby and Hull.

  • @strange6 In my book, having a 720bhp engine per car is overpowered, no matter if 1,2 or all three engines are working. The train is overpowered, full stop.

  • Very comfortable train (and fast), I use them to get to Manchester Piccadilly most weekends, the seating is very comfortable, and the train doesn't rattle and nearly as much as most that I've journeyed on
