If you know anything about how footage is shot, this is clearly scripted and not natural.
Look at the way the close-ups of their faces go back and forth during the 'uncomfortable' moments, or jump back to reveal both of them at the crucial moment. These guys were saying lines for the camera, fake documentary style.
You can see exactly the same stuff in The Office.

I think you pretty much nailed it. I also believe Garry was trying to give Ricky some pointers about comedy without flat out coming out and saying it.

Personally, I think Garry was surprised at the way Ricky acted in the interview- if you see Garry's interviews on his Dvd- they are very different and interesting- perhaps he was just not gonna give into gervais's slight arrogance with his head still swirling from his success (I loved the office, but shandling is in a class of his own in terms of cleverness and wit)

i thought that they both came across really bad on this.
Gervais was too forward & obknoxious, whereas Shandling was too touchy & excentric.
