StoneRiver was actually formed just on July fourteen two thousand eight, so, a very new company. It is a combination of businesses that were sold by Pfizer Corporation and created StoneRiver which really brought us to workday back this summer. It provides a variety of software and business process services to the insurance industry. And that could be anything from workers' comp, flood insurance, property casualty, pharmacy, and the list goes on and on.
As I said, we were sold on July fourteen. We were told by Pfizer Corporation that we had to be off of their HR systems and payroll systems by October first. Now, we are a company of two thousand employees in thirty different states, with lots of different businesses. So, OK, July fourteenth, October one live? That was a daunting task.
So, the first thing that came to my mind was that we really needed to engage someone who had a great on demand system, number one. So, the whole SaaS model, for me, was an immediate decision then it was, OK, who do we get to do that.
For me, it was, you know, we had to be cost effective, we had to be very quick. I did not expect to have any IT infrastructure available to me and so, you know, really, that needed to be managed by somebody else. So, at the end of day, I needed someone who could own, implement and manage an HRS system. The added features of your partnerships of workdays partnerships with folks like ADP and a Taleo made it all the better. Because, again, we had to initiate all of these processes very quickly.
Again, going back to a SaaS model, the one thing that we didn't want to spend a lot of money on was capital investment and those very expensive licenses up front just didn't make sense, and, you know, I'm sure you can to pick up, you know if we were sold on July fourteen and we had to have this done by October, this was a pretty fast moving bus; and so also one that's going to change. We're still figuring out, you know, what we want to be doing to a certain extent. The other cost factor was, certainly, IT. We didnt have a budget for a big HR dedicated IT team and the expense of that, that goes along with it.
Certainly, we have a VP of security and when I was sort of going off into, Oh, this workday, this is going to be great, who is workday? What is happening? And they did a very, very thorough analysis of the security systems with workday both in terms of employee security, Sarbanes-Oxley, all of those kinds of issues that we all have to be concerned about, there was just no issue. Which was great.
Certainly, workday has been pulling in best practices as they develop. But workday is also very new. We are customer number fifty four. I have a coffee mug that says fifty four on it and one of the selling points, because I made the recommendation to the executive team of the company, was that we have the ability to help shape what workday looks like down the road. And so, I have a laundry list of things that, I think, we need to be doing. I say we and I mean we because it really has been a partnership between workday and StoneRiver.
You know, you look at your email, like most of us do before we go to bed because, gosh, what else is there? And, the update is happening tomorrow. OK. And, you go to sleep. And the next day, you get an email. Its done. And youre, like, wow, thats pretty painless.
