How Django Reinhardt survived German occupation

Django and QduHCdeFrance made a lot of recordings for Decca when in London in 1938. Decca issued a boxed set in the 70's of 5 LPs which I loved. Sadly the Removals people in Basildon pillaged our possessions when we hired them to return them to Canada and fully 1/2 of my Jazz collection was lost including all items from N-Z, so Reinhardt was right in the middle.
I don't entirely understand Shuttlebill's comment, except that you could pick up girls at the dances. Django just played.
