When I was in high school, we had to read THE HOUSE OF THE 7 GABLES. It bored me stiff. Twenty years later I reread it and was able to see the author's genius. My point is that there are lots of books that deserve a second chance.
BTW, IN HIS STEPS is the 19th biggest selling novel in history.

I read this book 25 years ago, but was not impressed. However, my brother-in-law, who is a born-again Christian, is currently reading it and is fascinated by this book. Perhaps I should give it another shot.

I would say it is not the "best" written book I have read... but if you consider when it was written and and the historical context it is a good read. And you can't deny the impact it has had on countless people over the years. It is that impact which inspired me to adapt it to the stage.
