Gitana 13" Makes Sailing History A French crew of ten made sailing history traveling 14,500 miles from New York to San Francisco on February 28th, 2008. The boat was captained by Lionel Lemonchois and went by way of Cape Horn. The weather was rough at Cape Horn and the vessel had to take shelter for 5 days. "Gitana 13" is a 110 foot Catamaran whose speed can reach up to 43 knots. They hit light winds on the last leg entering the mouth of the San Francisco Bay. Even in light winds they passed under the Golden Gate Bridge at 10 to 14 knots.
The finish line is between Alcatraz Lighthouse and Coit Tower. The oldest record of this route was the famous passage of the "Flying Cloud" in 1854 with the time of 89 days and 8 hours. The passage was dubbed "Route D'Or" for the California Gold Rush. In 1998 "Aquitainne Innovations", another French vessel, broke that record making the time of 57 days and 3 hours.

The "Gitana 13" will makes its next stop in Tokyo on its way around the world.

  • Very excellent quality.

Perhaps you are already aware of this; append &fmt=18 to the URL for YT's experimental h.264 stereo version. According to videohelp dot com, YT started encoding stereo aac Mar 9th (yours added on Mar 15th and on), 'cause someone was uploading stereo that day while checking with &fmt=18 and all of the sudden he got stereo. I hope YT goes with this format for their HQ although their audio "compressor" makes everything loud.

  • WOW. VERY COOL. Thanks for the tip and thanks for the compliment.

  • This works really well on the three videos I posted illustrating gyro hand held stabilization and makohead marine stabilization. Thanks for sharing. I read about this when it first came out. It is kind of exciting isn't it? To see hd on yt.

This video was hand-held no stabilization but it was like a lake out there and I have an awesome captain.

  • omg that boat is WOW..

  • Well, I also use a hand-held gyro stabilizer, but it is very heavy and it does not get the same results. The makohead is expensive to use, both in rental and crew, but it is definitely worth it for a professional end product.

  • My last reply didn't go where I wanted. Are most of your vids in stereo, like before this one?

  • Yes it's more noticable with YT's audio compression. I really don't know why they're doing it (to discourage music trading?) I like ambience. I had to google makohead - that's a beast! They don't make a smaller model?:)

  • What an incredable boat!! Some of the crew too!!
