so is this like grinding down the blade to make a new edge?
-
if you finish the edge by stropping it on the smooth lip of the cup the results will be better sometimes i use the edge of my granite counter which works well too

just went into the kitchen and did all my blunt knives!! works wonders thanks for posting!!!

@mike1234567ify Honing does not take off metal. It manipulates, or rearranges it on a microscopic level to bring a finer point. Honing is done on something like leather.

@ everyone who says this is honing. 'Honing' is taking off a small amount of metal, 'sharpening' is taking off a larger amount of metal. You CAN sharpen a blade doing this, but it will take you 1000 times more effort than if you used a grinder, diamond stone, or tool for reshaping the knife edge.

Hold the knife, at about a 30 d-d-d-degree angle

Back in Nam we would stick a dead Gook with our dull bayonets and work it in and out a few time...the grinding on the bones sharpened them up real good....yessiree.
And what if I want to sharpen my cup?

I tried it - but never again. Spilled hot coffee all over myself!
