Calliope at 2009 Marietta Sternwheel Festival

A musician plays the calliope on a barge while being pushed by a sternwheeler taking part in a race on the Ohio River at Marietta, Ohio. A later view on the Muskingum River affords a close-up. Also on the barge are vintage riverboat whistles and a boiler to provide steam. This must be the only musical instrument in the world with the possible risk of explosion!

He got a big write up in the Waterways Journal and must HAVE been well respected seeing how many people attended his funeral.

He left behind a big company too. He owned Madison Coal & Supply which operates the Laura J shown here, along with the Lady Lois and the Major, which are the last sternwheelers used for work purposes.
