The 1996 debate at Oxford featuring four eminent participants, including noted biblical scholar Rabbi Shmuley Boteach and evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins.

The panelists tackle the issue of whether or not God, and by extension, religion, is needed for there to be goodness in the world. Rabbi Boteach boldly asserts that the greatest tragedies of the 20th century were not only removed from religious motivations, but were responsible for more casualties than religious wars in all other times put together.

  • Oh, gah! I know. I watched it. It was positively PAINFUL to listen to Boteach's ramblings. Hitchens ripped him a new one. Repeatedly. lol

(I especially liked it when Boteach brought up the Holocaust, then Hitchens said something about it, then Boteach tried to accuse him of inappropriately bringing up the Holocaust, & Hitchens pointed-out that he hadn't---that it was Boteach who had done so, & the audience audibly confirmed this fact. lol)

  • What is a lie exactly, Patrick? Specify clearly, please. And provide references---because what I have stated here is true. I actually watched the "debates" upon which I am commenting. So, I request clarification of what you state.

  • So is this the last part? Where's the result, the vote?

I've heard / read a few times strange claims that Boteach "won" this debate. I can't see how, by even a wild stretch of the imagination, anyone would think that.

This is aside from the fact that this is NOT a debate between Boteach and Dawkins anyway.

  • extazy, have you actually had any pertinent responses at all to your annoying spamming? Just mildly curious.

  • retnu, the coughing, wheezing, throatclearing, feetshuffling, etc, is all maddening. Not only that but we have to (or at least I do) rush to turn down the volume every time the audience applauds or laughs to avoid being deafened.

It's as if they've got microphones all over the audience and have the speakers' mic turned down too low

.... except when an audience member is asking a question of course; THEN we can't hear them!

  • 1:12 - 1:31 - The coughing at these times was very annoying. Anyone else notice it?

  • I somewhat agree that we should follow reason and evidence. That is why people should follow Judaism (or at least the 7 universal laws of Noah). "Judaism" which is really the Torah is based on scientific evidence. Check on youtube- "Rabbi Mizrachi Torah and Science , or Divineinformation". please comment back AFTER watching it.

  • The man was saying that, in fact, he was OK with sadomasochism. Rabbi Shmeuly had assumed that that was beyond the pale. It was just an example, though. The same point could be made with murder that you could get away with, a point Rabbi Shmuly made before.

  • Go straight to hell and rot Shmuley Boteach! You're a thief, liar and a crook who stoles hundreds from innocent children's. You're a money hungry devil worshiper! DON'T BUY HIS BOOKS!

  • that is a lie ,

    patrick .
