Richard Trumka, the president of America's largest labor federation, said President Obama faces a key moment in the eyes of working Americans and that if he "nibbles" at big issues "working people will judge him that way."

-----

On Thursday, August 25, 2011, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka joined the Monitor Breakfast for a conversation with reporters.

"If you want to help workers, you first need to help people," said On September 16, 2009, Richard L. Trumka was elected President of the AFL-CIO by acclamation at the Federation's 26th convention in Pittsburgh, Pa. His election, following 15 years of service as the AFL-CIO's Secretary Treasurer, capped Trumka's rise to leadership of the nation's largest labor federation from humble beginnings in the small coal mining communities of southwest Pennsylvania.

With a union, the chance of bargaining for a better wage improves. At least, that is my experience. Also, the uniting of workingmen(and women!) in unions made the 8 hour day and the abolition of child labor possible.

Thank the union for you not having to work 12-14 hours a day at minimum wages, not working saturdays, having no vacation etc etc

Sometimes that is true, but there is more strength in numbers with a union.
