Guns'n Roses step aside. While there may not be any "Chinese Democracy" in the Middle Kingdom (the album has been banned in China), there definitely is some rock and roll. But, the scene is just getting started. Here's an up close look at what happens when rock and roll and communism meet.

  • CHECK OUT THE CHINA HEAVY METAL MUSIC, THEY ARE REALLY GOOD!!

  • @Mrasianpopmusic totally! The music is getting more rocking every year! Keep it coming!

  • It surprises me that he has trouble filling the venue considering the huge music festivals like Midi. On the other hand, Chantal probably has a point.. too expensive, probably because the scene seems to be run to a large extent by expats, for expat audiences..

  • And they pay attention to what's on CCTV (Chinese government accepted mainstream), not what's on the fringes, because the fringe aren't covered by any Chinese media. In other words, it's censored by being ignored.

  • as for midi, as far as i understand, it ran successfully for several years and was canceled in 2008 for political problems, not lack of an audience...then again, im not based in china right now, so i could be quite out of touch with the current situation :)

  • You're right, it was canceled in 2008 for political issues, not due to lack of audience. When I say general lack of knowledge, I'm not just talking about the audience, but the government itself. Such actions are very unhelpful for the rock movement to keep gaining traction. It was so depressing when the police shut Max down on the day. Beijing can recover, other cities it's harder. You're totally right, the range of original music is getting better and better. Let's see what happens in 2010!

  • And Panayotaki, thanks for your thoughts! It's nice to know someone gives a damn.

  • This is when music is pure. Soon these times will be gone, and everyone will look back with nostalgia. Enjoy it while you can!

  • Cool!!! just love the Chinese music scene, I toured there in 2006 with my band JEF and in 2009 and 2010 with my new band K-Jell (check out videos from the tours here on You Tube), I will be back in 2011 for a new tour in China with K-Jell. China has a great scenen with a lot of good venues. I know is SUBS (Beijing) and SMZB (Wuhan), very good friends of mine. All our albums you can get from October Party Records in Beijing :)
