At the Stonewall mayoral hustings (19/4/08), Livingstone gave this explanation for welcoming the anti-gay Muslim cleric to City Hall in 2004.

@spacecowboy95 Al-Qaradawi once claimed he only meant Zionists. Other times he has said 1 Hitler was punishment inflicted upon Jews for their corruption, 2 he would love to be able to shoot Jews, the enemies of Allah, before he died, 3 Jews are the enemies of Islam, a profligate, cunning, arrogant band of people who spread corruption & tyranny. He also said beating does not benefit every wife, but is suitable for some.
