Allah (SWT) says in Quran which means "Who is better in speech than one who calls (men) to Allah, works righteousness, and says, "I am of those who bow in Islam?" Explaining this Ayah Imam Raazi (RA) says "WA MINHUM MAN QAAL-AL MOAZZINOON" which means: some Mufassireen said "These are who call the Azaan for Salah". Because this ayah includes everyone who call towards Allah (SWT), the moazzineen are among them. Sayyidatuna Ayeshah Siddiqah (R A) also says in the explanation of this Ayah that "It was revealed for those who call people for the prayer and they also perform Salah between Azaan and Iqaamah".
Hazrat Faqeeh Abul Lais Samarqandi (RA) narrates in his book Tambehul Ghafileen that "A man came to Rasulullah and said "Tell me any good deed which will make me enter paradise" he replied "Become moazzin so that people will gather for the prayer on your call" the man said "O Messenger of Allah, if I cannot do this?" He said "Then become Imaam of your people, they will perform their Salah behind you" then the man asked "And what if I cannot do this?" He said "Make sure that you are in the 1st row".
In another Hadith which is narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA) comes that Rasool said "Imaam is responsible (for the believers Salah who follow him) and muazzin is trustworthy (to call for the Salah on time). O Allah, guide the Imaams and forgive the muazzineen." Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (RA) narrates that the Holy Prophet said "I am responsible for five kinds of people that gain entrance to Jannah. The woman who is obedient to her husband, the son who is obedient to his parents, the one who died on the way to Makkah (Hajj), the one who has good character, and the one who calls the Azaan in the Masjid for the sake of Allah". In a different Hadith which is narrated by Anas bin Maalik (RA) who said "Three types of people will be on the mountain of Musk. They also will not be afraid of accountability or be overcome with embarrassment of Qiyamah. (1)The Imaam of the people who are happy with him (2) the man who calls to the five daily prayers (3) the slave who is obedient to his master and Allah.
There are many companions of the Holy Prophet who wanted to be a muazzin. Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood and Saad bin Waqqas both said "If I was a muazzin I would never care to join in the battle". Hazrat Ali said "I do not regret anything except, I wish I could have requested from Rasool to appoint Hasan and Hussein to be muazzin." Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (RA) said "If I was a muazzin I would not care for any Nafl Hajj or Umrah except for the farz.
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam, I have mentioned the greatness of Azaan through the Hadith earlier. However, being a muazzin is not easy. You know from the Hadith that the muazzin is a trustworthy person in regards to calling the Azaan on time. That is why it has been said by Faqih Samarqandi "The muazzin will receive all these good deeds when he will call the Azaan at the proper time, and when he correctly pronounces the Azaan. If someone else calls the Azaan in his absence or sits on his place, the regular muazzin must not be angry. The Azaan must have the proper inflections, sound beautiful, and must be called only for the sake of Allah (not for showing off). He should wait for the Imaam to come to lead the Salat, but not too long. The muazzin must not pray too long for the Sunnah between the Azaan and Iqaamah as to make the people late for the farz. He should take care of the Masjid, keep it clean, must not allow the small children to make too much noise or cause the Masjid to become filthy.
Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (RA) narrates that the Holy Prophet said "Those who called Azaan for the sake of Allah will raise up from their graves calling the Azaan, and everything that heard the the muazzin's Azaan in his life will be a witness for him on the day of judgment. Allah (SWT) forgives the muazzin as much as his voice is loud. He gets the same amount of reward for as many people that respond to his Azaan. His dua'a is accepted between the Azaan and Iqaamah. Whatever he asks Allah (SWT) gives to him in the Dunya, keeps for the muazzin in the Akhirah, or removes any problem from his life. The first person who will be given the garments of Jannah will be Ibrahim (AS), then Muhammad , then other Messengers and Prophets, then those muazzineen who called the Azaan for the sake of Allah. The Angels will greet them with large rubies in hand, and from their graves seventy-thousand Angels will follow them to the place of judgment. That is why Ibn Abbas (RA) narrates that the Holy Prophet said " MAN AZZANA SAB'A SINEENA MOHTASIBAN KUTIBA LAHI BARA'ATUM MINAN NAAR" which means: "Whoever called the Azaan for seven years only for the sake of Allah will be freed from the hellfire."
