February 14th, 2009, my birthday.
Essentially, this is probably one of the best experiences a steam fan can have. Operated by the New Orleans Steamboat Company, the Natchez was built in 1975 with two oil-fired Cleaver-Brooks boilers, and is propelled by two 1925 double-expansion (compound) engines, which were the original power for the U.S. Steel sternwheeler towboat Clariton; at full power, the engines operate at 16 R.P.M., and produce over 1600 horsepower. As we pulled out running late, the skipper was pushing full ahead for the majority of the trip.
The Calliope (1:00 - 2:08) was recorded after the trip was over, while the Natchez was at her moorings.
