Johnnie Ray was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist who enjoyed major popularity for most of the 1950s. He has been cited by many critics as a major precursor of what would become rock and roll. His jazz and blues-influenced music and his animated stage persona made him one of the first teen idols. In 1951 his Cry and The Little White Cloud That Cried both reached #1 on the Billboard charts. In March, 1952, he had three songs at once in the Billboard Top Ten. His cover of Nat King Coles "Walkin' My Baby Back Home" reached #4 on the Billboard charts. His last major hit was "Just Walkin' in the Rain" in 1956. This selection reached #3 in 1952 and was one of several that employed the backing of The Four Lads.
