This is the Citrus Tower in Clermont, FL. It opened here in 1955 in the middle Florida in an area that was known for it's Citrus production. This area was quite a site to behold as there were Citrus Groves litterally as far as the eye could see. That is, until the back to back freezes we had in 1984, 86, and 89 which destroyed all the citrus industries in the Central Florida area. Nearby Groveland was also hard it as it was where the citrus related industries were located.

  • @erikeverett I too am a resident of the Orlando area and I'm a native born Floridian as well. I do remember the back to back hard freezes we had in the 80's, I also remember the freeze we had not long after that just when the citrus groves were starting to recover. I couldn't help but remember what once was there in the 80's. Now you look down and see miles of rooftops where the groves once were, small businesses where all the shops that sold everything citrus related.

  • Cool I always wondered what that tall building was when they showed it on the 5 day forcast thingy.

    Thanks for uploading this!

  • It's so sad to see what Clermont has become. It was one of the most beautful places in Florida back when the groves were around. I can't even go over there anymore because it's so ugly now. Glad I have the memories at least.

  • Thanks for the well thought out video. I lived in Montverde Academy in the late 80's and remember vividly the freeze of 89. It was so sad when the leaves fell off and the billions of unusable oranges were exposed, still hanging from the trees for weeks. Within a 2 month span the groves went from green and lush to brown and decay. Turn the page to the next chapter... the groves never came back after that one.

  • Love the view. You can see our apartment complex at the top at 4:47. :-)
