"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" follows title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Sorcerers.
Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever...Gollum.
Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of ingenuity and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum's "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities... A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

@Joey7321: In what way? Maybe you should elaborate on what you do consider non logical within my comment; but I do object the fight scenes because they are far too much acrobatic and therefore not fascinating at all, watch the version of Henry V made in 1989 to see what I mean, as its battle scenes are the best ones I have seen so far; and Tolkien would have hardly changed that much in the Children of Hurin as the whole tale was crafted around the curse of Morgoth and its dreadful effects.

Uhm, the first comment is kind of a non sequitur for me :P The main issue I have with the films is that the battle camera is so shaky you can see sh*t - when I come to the cinema, I want to watch some fights, not blurry chaos! Ye, many Silmarilion tales are very dark, but so is the history of humankind ;) Children of Hurin is a reworked tale, mind you, so we do not know how Tolkien would've finished it/polished it. :)

@Joey7321: Let me guess: You are one of the few true believers and have read the books ere the movie was made and are now disappointed that your imagination does not fit the movie version?

But as for the Hobbit: I think that Tolkien did develop his ideas over time and he seems to be getting more dark and tragic, compare the Lord of the Rings to the Children of Hurin or other tales of the Silmarillion.

It is not a matter of 'loveliness" but a matter of grotesque. He does not look like a degenerate hobbit to me. But it is the VOICE that is extremely annoying :/ Abt Hobbit: I ddin't know about the modifications, thx for the info, , but it was still just a light-hearted tale, maybe except for the bitter ending, when compared to LOTR, wasn't it? :)

@Joey7321: But Gollum isn’t really meant to be lovely in the books too, or is he? But maybe you should elaborate this point of yours a bit: What have they done to Gollum?

But for the Hobbit: Of course it is a book for children of all ages but more for the grown up ones of course and Tolkien himself did modify it in order to fit better to the Lord of the Rings.
