Documentary : Rastafari
Location : Ethiopia Shashamane
Director : Vincent Walsh&Afrikan Simba

This is one of many interviews I did in Ethiopia Shashamane.

I met the reggae artist, Afrikan Simba. Afrikan Simba is a Rastafarian. I traveled to both Ethiopia and Nigeria with Simba. While in Ethiopia, we traveled to Shashamane, a city in the Region of Oromia and the Zone Seat of West Arsi Zone. In 1948, Emperor Haile Selassie I donated 500 acres of his private land to allow Black Ethiopian World Federation officers, members and other settlers, from Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean, to return to their ancestral homeland in Africa. While in Shashamane, I visited the three Rastafarian tribes, the Nyahbhinghi Tribe, Bobo Ashanti tribe and the twelve tribes of Israel. My time in Shashamane was spent with spiritual leaders; one leader was called Teddy Dan, a black British Rastafarian who had repatriated in 1998. All the Rastafarians in Shashamane live as a sustainable community, which is low-impact and self-feeding. Each tribe grows different food; food is the currency in Shashamane, and there is no need for money in these communities. Food is grown for the local people only. The meal you eat in the evening was harvested that morning. In Teddy Dan's garden, a "food forest", I was exposed for the first time to the possibilities of growing your own food. At the time, I was 26 years old, and this was the first time that I had seen anyone eat food straight from their garden. Fruit and vegetables were in abundance in his garden. After spending four months in Shashamane, I came back to the UK knowing that I no longer had a desire to become an art director, nor did I want to work "9-5" for any commercial business again. I returned to London, resigned my job in Soho, and moved back to Manchester. I now have a new vision: Urban Sustainability.
