This improvised scene was cut from the film early in the editing process. Other scenes from the script that expanded the film beyond the four main characters were removed from the schedule due to budget constraints. As a result this scene exploring Tre's relationship with his mother did not fit in the tight-knit narrative that was developing at the editing stage. Teddy Chen Culver was an early candidate for the role of Gabe. He also appears in "My Life Disoriented" and "Americanese."
