With a population of 145 million, Bangladesh is the most densely populated country in the world and almost half of the population lives below the poverty level. Reduction in fertility and improved human health are important indicators of poverty alleviation, one of the country's overall development goals. However, affordable, sustainably managed, and accessible health care for all segments of the population was a challenge.
The Chemonics implemented Bangladesh Smiling Sun Franchise Program was designed to address this challenge by developing a network of highly sought after health clinics that could offer quality health care services to all Bangladeshis. While the idea of social franchising was new in Bangladesh, there was a long history of managing health services in the NGO sector, and certainly the capacity to quickly learn the skills needed to manage a social franchising operation, and save lives.
Watch this video to see how the franchise clinics generate operating income from paying customers while addressing the needs of the poorest of the poor -- a sustainable health-care solution.
