Most feral bees may be africanized, but how do you know that is from a feral hive? I used to live in Mesa, and there were actually many beekeepers in the middle of town. On top of that, there has been a recent resurgence of small beekeepers. In other words, if you are in the middle of town, you can't be sure.
Anyway, the reason people get upset about killing bees is because of the amount of talk about CCD in the news lately. It's not that big of a deal actually.

At least no one got hurt.... I've had hives that I swear had African genes. The queen came from Texas.
It's almost impossible to tell if the bees are africanized unless they are stinging, and even then it is not possible to tell for sure outside of a lab. This was a swarm, and swarms are very docile generally, even africanized swarms. If someone told you they were africanized over the phone, they didn't know what they were talking about.

Twenty years ago I would have agreed that it would take a lab to tell the difference. Bee specialists have said said that a few years ago most, if not all of the bees in Arizona have been Africanized.

Were they confirmed Africanized? Should have called a beekeeper like myself. I would have taken them away.

Yes, Africanized confirmed by a bee specialist. I called a bee guy but he couldn't get here soon enough for my wife. Most weren't killed. They were just made to feel unwelcome, which is what I wanted. Plus I didn't want the neighbor kids or dogs to get stung.
