"ya? like who?" i try my best 2 keep the conversation sounding lite.
"a guy named mitchell. u mite now him."
"ya hes my cousin. anyone else?"
"oh hey thts cool! and ya 1 more person. i tutor her in french. her names kayleigh." ik who he was talking about as soon as i heard his voice soften when he said 1 more person. ik she could be more thn a friend wen he said her name & his voise got all cute. & ik i couldnt stay here 1 more second without breaking down. i was so stupid for letting myself believe i had a chance with him. so stupid. i have 2 get out of here.
"oh cool. hey il be rite back." i say quietly, voice shaking.
"r u ok?" he asks.
"ya. fine." i rush up 2 the teacher & ask 2 go 2 the lav. as soon as im in i txt aly 2 get over here. she doesnt need 2 txt back. ik she'll come.not even 10 seconds l8r rite on que aly peeks in.
"hey wats going on? wats rong?" she asks, forehead wrinkled with concern.
"everything. i let myself believe i had a chance & got crushed because of it." i start 2 tear up. she instantly knows wat im talking about. she puts her arm around me.
"so who..?" she starts 2 ask but drifts off.
"kayleigh young." i say. enough said. its always her.
"oh. r u sure?"
"ya. it was so obvious. its only a matter of time." saying tht reminded me of wat aly had said 2 me on the bus. so much 4 tht. we sit there on the bench thts nailed to the floor against the wall as i sulk. she stays silent. she always knows wen 2 talk wen 2 listen & most importantly wen 2 keep quiet.
"hey bre? we really should get back 2 class." she says quietly.
"ya great. me and him and partners. how am i suppost 2 do this? i cant." i start to panick.
"yes u can. just be careful about eye contact & wat subject u bring up in conversation."
"ya. thts wat i shoulda done b4.have u made any new friends? ya. great. wonderful. best idea i ever had." i mock myself.
"oh come on ul be fine. wev been in here for.. 15 minutes." she checks her fone 4 the time. "we really do have 2 get back."
"ur rite." i agree reluctantly.
"come on. il walk u 2 ur math class so u dont have 2 walk alone." she offers.
"ok. thx. ur pretty awesome u no tht?"
she laughs. "oh yes ik." we walk down the hall in silence. wen we reach the door she wishes me good luck.
"ok so good luck dont cry & little 2 no eye contact." she smiles encouragingly.
"ok thx. u seriously r the best."i say and smile back.
"see ya at lunch."
"bye." i wave as she starts going in the opposite direction we came from. ok, i say 2 myself. deep breath. act like nuthings wrong. just do the stupid math problems then get out. i walk thru the open door and quickly take my seat.
"hey wat happened uve been gone for like 20 minutes." says justin.
"oh it was nothing. aly had a little crisis. its all fine now." i fib just a bit.
"oh. is she ok?" he asks.
"ya ya shes fine. shes gonna be just fine. i say trying 2 convince myself its true. but truth be told i just dont no if im gonna be fine, any time soon tht is.
"oh. ok. well i finished my math problems. u can work on urs if u want." he passes me the paper. i look at the clock. i still have 15 minutes b4 i can book it out of here.
"mhm." i mumble without looking at him & start doing out the problems silently. i can tell hes confused by my abrupt mood swing. i went from happy & laid back 2 reserved and sharp. but i say nothing and neither does he the rest of the class. i cant bear 2 look at him even 1ce. as soon as the bell rings & class is dismissed im all packed up and out the door in less thn 10 seconds. i do not look back. the rest of the day is difficult. theres no other way 2 describe it. trying 2 avoid him in the other few classes we have 2gether and in the hallway. i dont have 2 aviod him at lunch tho. he sits at kayleighs table. he brings his french book and is all laughs and smiles the hole time. hes so happy. i cant stand it. how can he be? he has 2 no me better then her. i mean 4 gods sake he just met her yesterday! he says he likes a girl with pretty eyes. hers r a dull gray. im swedish. i have very blue eyes. thts the only things about me pretty much tht i like. but bottom line gray is not an attractive color. but then again everything else about her is perfect. perfect skin perfectly strate hair perfectly skinny freakin perfect everything! how much i want to be her 4 the first time in my life. she already has a claim on the 1 thing i have 2 live without. & tht sucks!
"hes a weenie." maddy insistes. "he short and has a pet chuawa named sammy." maddy tries to liten pple misery with humor. sometimes it works.. and then again sometimes it doesnt.
"its not a chuawa." is all i say.
