that looks to have been filmed in Bridie's Cottage which I understand has been closed. When James died, Eugene wrote me the most poignant and loving letter about his dear friend. I could (and do) listen to these two incredible musicians over and over. Now I need to start planning my next trip to Ireland 'cause I miss The Wee Bas as we named him on our trip (that's a great story, too). thanks Maureen for uploading and your artistic presentations.
Just about the best at playing the slow airs.He spent most of his best years in Philadelphia. We were so lucky to have been able to hear his playing. I understand that he has returned to his beloved Derry, and does not play much if at all any more. But we have his records and tapes to sustain us.
No, it's definitely Mellow Virginia! Apparently up in the Craft Village in Derry this was filmed for a Channel Four film. The quaintness fooled me. Thanks Ma for putting me straight.
Two great Irish men, both masters of their craft. My all time favourite version of the Derry Air. It just doesn't get any better than this. In case you're wondering my grandfather smoked Mellow Virginia in Ireland but here (USA) I bet he's puffing on Captain Black. Thanks for posting this!
I am so thrilled to receive this video. Eugene I know most of my life and James McCafferty on the piano is the man who taught me all the beautiful Irish songs I know. I was a member of The Little Gaelic Singers who travelled America on several tours and James was the musical director. My son, Declan plays Danny Boy on Irish harp which you can hear on my channel. I am really delighted with this. Thank you so much. I have more recordings of Eugene and intend to upload them soon.
