Triops longicaudatus are easy to grow. The noise in the background is Albert, our 22 year old cockatiel.

  • Will they hatch in reverse osmosis water, or does it need to be distilled?

  • @kohlrabis I have used both and can tell no difference in the hatching rates.

  • @albink Thanks! I'm looking forward to trying them. Have you ever tried them in an enclosed system (i.e., something like a mini eco-sphere)?

  • @kohlrabis I never have tried a closed system. I know they use more oxygen than the shrimp that usually come with the commercial kits so I would think that they would need a larger sphere with more algae than the usual commercial ones. Since they also eat about 70% meat protein I would not think they would be very good candidates for a closed sphere. The shrimp that come with the commercial kits almost exclusively eat the algae and microorganisms. I would not recommend trying it.

  • needs sand for eggs

  • @albink Yeah... the sad thing is though that mine are still babies : ( I just went up to chek on them and i only saw one, and he was having the same problem. I didn't see the others.

  • @iawkwardturtle02 I have seen the same thing happen. My belief is that those had some type of genetic problem that caused their deaths. It happened every generation to me. Sad but there is not much you can do about that. You may also notice a dieoff when they reach adulthood at age 21 days. That seems to be a critical point for any of them who have shell shedding genetic problems. I lose from 20-50% then. Any that make it past that point usually reach old age.

  • @iawkwardturtle02 that I've fed them! The only thing I've noticed is that a couple of them will appear to be trying extremely hard to move, but, for whatever reason, they can not. they struggle for a while, and then , sadly, they die in the end. Do you know what might be going on? thanks so much for your help!

  • @albink Hi! Just wanted to let you know (although it's a bit late) that my triops hatched! i put them in a ten gallon tank with filtered tap water and they seem to be doing ok for the most part... they hatched about three days ago, and there was originally around seven of them, now I see about five. They really are growing fast, and they're having a field day now

  • Wish these things can survive in any kind of water :(
