A pair of playful whales breached in unison several times during a Sea World Whale Watch Gold Coast whale watching tour much to the delight of spectators aboard Sea World's luxury whale watching vessel Spirit of Migloo. It was a spectacular display of grace and power.
It is believed that whales breach for a number of reasons. Whales move slowly through the water and so attract a variety of parasites, such as barnacles and lice that would usually be burnt off the skin of faster moving whales by friction. It is therefore believed that they breach to shake off the parasites. Breaching is also thought to be a form of communication because the noise created by the huge splash can be heard from several miles away. Breaching can also be a display of aggression towards other whales.
