Cleveland police respond to SWAT situation

Early on the morning of Tuesday, May 5, officers from the Cleveland Police Department (CPD) responded to what can be described as a SWAT situation.

Dispatchers received a call that a male resident of the Pine Hollow apartment complex located on Sleepy Hollow Dr. had barricaded himself in his apartment.

He had said that he was going to kill himself and his girlfriend, and if the cops came, he was going to kill them, too, said Cleveland Detective Captain Scott Felts.

Felts went on to state that approximately eight CPD officers were on the scene and that they utilized tactical training in their response.

Felts stated that CPD evacuated the six families who live in the apartment complex and that they cut the power to the building.

We were out there with bullhorns and everything and we couldnt get contact, said Felts.

He went on to state that, after approximately four hours, officers were able to get a visual.

We got a visual through the blinds and it looked like the suspect may have been passed out, but we couldnt be sure, said Felts.

He stated that after approximately four hours officers were able to gain entry into the apartment.

According to Felts, officers found the suspect asleep and surrounded by weaponry.

He had weapons and ammunition stacked around him, said Felts.

He went on to state how lucky the responding officers were that the suspect, whose name has not been released, fell asleep.

Felts added the suspect currently has not been charged with anything; however, he was taken into custody.

Officers took him to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, said Felts.

CPD was assisted by three deputies from the Liberty County Sheriffs Office.
