So fun Lesley! Sure brought back those childhood memories and I even did a similar project with black paint with my son's handprints. I love how gorgeous the detail on those doilies POP! Your creative vision is endless...thanks for sharing!

is there any other way to heat it without a heat gun?

You need directed heat. You can try a hair dryer but I am guessing it would be too forceful, blow away the embossing powder, and will not produce enough directed heat (because they are much larger where the air comes out). Heat guns are your best bet. They are made for projects like this, and perfect for melting embossing powders. There are a few to choose from on the market. Hope that helps.

Really cool technique!! Thanks for this. I was thinking...... Could you use a Breyer with the liquid distress ink or do you need to do dtp technique on this?? Thanks a lot!!

You can try anything once! Go for it! A brayer would work very well. You just need to make sure you can get into those cracks.
You can try any water based dye inks with a brayer and ink pad. All Distress Inks and Adirondack inks by Ranger would work well too, just use a nice dark color.
