I just came back from Wonthaggi coal mines and this song proves to be very Australian. The men used to go down there and many deaths would occur through the extreme conditions. They would use canaries in cages (end scene) to see if the air was good, if not, the birds would die, and the miners would know not to venture in. Classic song
