Burkholderia cepacia is the name for a group or "complex" of bacteria that can be found in soil and water and survive for extended periods of time in moist environments. Also known as BCC or B. cepacia, the bacteria are often resistant to common antibiotics.
Burkholderia cepacia poses little medical risk to most healthy people. However, people who have certain health problems like weakened immune systems or chronic lung diseases, particularly cystic fibrosis, may be more susceptible to infections from Burkholderia cepacia.

Is it pronounced burk-HOLD-ria or burk-hole-DER-ia?

We sometimes struggle with the pronunciation and occasionally goof it ourselves. There is a great website that has pronunciations. Youtube does not allow links here, but if you Google "pronounce Burholderia" there is a PhD from a University that has a great website and audio links.
