Be sure to search so you can also view reel 1!

Laurel and Hardy attend the Variety Club luncheon (I believe Variety Club is a charitable organization?) sometime in the early 1950s (let me know if you have the exact date). The footage seems to be unedited newsreel footage. Reel 1 is silent, and looks as if it was shot with 2nd camera at the event to gain insert shots, etc. I have gone to great pains to stabilize the sound on reel 2.

In attendance at the luncheon were Nicolai Playoff (Coco the clown or auguste), comedian Charlie Chester, television emcee Eammon Andrews, boxer Freddie Mills, and other notables.

If you have any other info regarding this footage, feel free to leave a comment or contact me so I can update my description.

  • @one4all1000 PS it was on the 19th January 1952 by the way. Best regards.

  • It was actually 1952 if you check out the pathe site you see. (Google British Pathe Variety Club Luncheon - Reel 1 & Reel 2 1952.) It was at the Empress Club, London.

  • Lovely to see the great Freddie Mills at his very best

  • haurel and lardy! haha

    thanks for posting this.

incredible though that idiot eamon andrews asking them which one is hardy and which one is laurel! unbelievable really

  • Apparently Reels 1 and 2 are raw footage taken more or less at the same time by two somewhat inept Pathe cameramen at the same event. Aside from framing problems, they seemed to have a habit of starting each shot right after the speech or action had ended. One wonders if the sound for Reel 1 (which would enhance it greatly) is lost or not. At least Reel 2 identifies the clown as "Koko." Too bad so much footage was wasted on people other than L&H. Also odd to see Stan and Babe smoking.
