why do people always stand next to the symbols when recording. It drains everything else out. And why do they need so many?

I was standing at that spot prior to the drum line taking their respective places. You cannot see from the video, but behind and beside me is a very large crowd. Once the symbol players began lining up in front of me, I was unable to change spots because of the dense crowd. Also, many drum lines have one symbol player for each snare player since the snare players use the symbols during certain cadences.
