Chase Walleen, 15-year-old high school student was treated at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla after a skateboarding accident on Oct. 22. Chase, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of his accident, suffered a serious head injury and underwent emergency brain surgery by neurosurgeon Dr. Frank Coufal. Now, fully recovered, Chase (along with his family and Dr. Coufal) are trying to spread the message to always wear a helmet when skateboarding.
Interesting statistic that 96% of people arriving at hospital with head injuries aren't weren't wearing helmets. However, given that far fewer than 1 in 20 skaters wear helmets, that would indicate that statistically you're more likely to end up in hospital with a head injury if you are wearing a helmet. I suspect this is due to the fact that less experienced skaters are often made to wear helmets by their parents, and beginners are more likely to suffer injuries.
