Each group of dolphins, no matter how large or small, establishes an order of dominance. Dominance is determined by size and age as well as by a behavior called "raking". Raking involves an aggressive animal chasing a subdominant animal and using its teeth to scratch the subdominant across the tail upper body. These rake marks are superficial and will eventually diappear as the skin continuously sheds. Here a young male dolphin attempts to be the dominant animal by chasing and raking the other two males in the group.
