It was a fun day, with a road trip to rural Baxley GA to pick up 3 lbs of Italian strain honey bees. (Approx 10,000 bees) Once we got them to Atlanta, they were put into a new hive. The queen stays in her cage until she is used to the smell of the new hive, and the workers have made some comb for her. I brought shallow supers, frames with bees wax coated foundation from Dadant. In a few days, we will take the cork out of one end of the queen cage, and let the worker bees eat through the marshmallow which blocks her exit. Once the queen gets busy laying eggs, the colony should expand to about 50-60,000 bees.

  • @warrenchikchik I've been reading about bees because we are hoping to start our own hive this year. When they have no home, they have nothing to be defensive about. In a few weeks though, once they are established they'd be grumpy about the guys hitting the sides of the boxes and generally messing them about. Once honey bees are away from their hive, they are very gentle, especially the types you purchase for backyard honey makers.

  • i love bees. i have always wanted to have a bee farm. thanks for this video its very helpful. :)

  • It was Randall on the phone making sure they checked for Honey Badgers.

  • @warrenchikchik i think its because theyre in a swarm, they dont sting much when they swarm, thats why those guys can have a "Beard of Bees" and not get stung.

  • Great video funny too

  • why aint they attack u ???dont u need to wear something on u?

  • Hey i would really like to start a bee hive in the uk but i cant find anyone who will sell the bees to be-- please help

  • @billavara be hives are usually made in 30 seconds because theres probebly over 1000 bees so it was made sooner

  • It's 2 years later now, how is that hive doing? :)

  • the queen travels with workers that look after her while she is in transit.....they collect the syrup from the other bees to feed her
