@RosieRoseRosa he's talking about what happened with techno in the early to mid 1990s, there was a particular time when clubs were dominated by males: on 10 Es, with their tops off, interested only in going harder and faster, by 95 "techno" had been badly tarnished by this. So-called deep techno, is more soulful, so the insinuation is that "women" find soulful music more appealing and will actually want to dance to it, a generalisation but there is some historical context for what he is saying.

any one know the beats he's playing in the cuts scenes?

I love Derrick May and everything, but this isn't the best interview. I don't necessarily agree with the whole idea of women following passionate music. Apparently he's never been to a dubstep show? Those things are packed with women and the music is not in the least bit romantic. Also, if women don't follow your music, they just don't follow your music. You didn't fucking miss anything. Still highly respect him as a DJ, but his notions are a tad off.

Here's the thing with this.. I am totally in agreement with what Derrick is saying. However, it's time he put his money where his mouth is, and actually release some new material.

@frizznitch im sure he does get sick of it. neither you or i can really say. my point is this: mr.may is such an engaging & interesting speaker its pathetic to see lazy "journalists" serve up the same questions time and time again, when his response on a thousand other questions would be x1000 more interesting & pertinent to hear. for those interested, i would search out the lengthy interview he did with red bull music academy.

comes across like a dick.

"When women don't follow the music... it means you've missed something.".
so we only like "romantic music". nice generalisation dickhead

Awesome interview. Nice camera angles as well.
LOL why are some of you so mad? This is my first time hearing about the guy so I watched this video totally unbiased and he comes across as genuine. He seems wise and very knowledgeable about what he's talking about. I looked him up afterwards and found out that he helped create Techno. Amazing.
