Chautauqua Interactive is a project group composed of five graduate students at Carnegie Mellon's Entertainment Technology Center. During the course of one semester we attempted to prove that technology can be used to create meaningful interactions in a theater setting. We came up with a performance of Rashomon in which the audience members are seated in swivel chairs inside a hexagonal stage. The orientation in which each chair faces determines the volume of three different speakers, each tied to a video projection. Each of these projections represents a character int he play and they are evenly distributed around the hexagon. The order in which the performance is played out by the live actors is also affected by the audience“s attention, which is measured by reading input from the swivel chairs.
