Riding the rails from Jakarta to Bogor, in an era of hard times. Musicians, mostly young (but a substantial number crippled, blind or simply destitute) roam the crowded kelas kambing ('goat class' for the rough hand-me-down trains from Japan), seeking coins from their fellow (also mostly poor) riders.
Blacky takes his bicycle to Parakansalak, riding as far as Bogor by train (see www.iglu-cilutung.blogspot.com ), and shooting these very skilled musicians at work -- enjoying themselves mostly (particularly with a bald white alien recording them with his digital Casio Exilim -- "...I'll make you a star! ...Stick with me baby, I'll have you wearing radishes the size of diamonds!")
The author does indeed hope that through YouTube he may connect once again with stalwart K4 musicians, that they might know that a world of viewers is enjoying Indonesia at its slackest, a fine if humble society that has treated this videographer very kindly.

  • Thanks for the comments, Randy. Good to hear from you. Hey, ain't YouTube something else? I have been following your expressions and action on the web for some time as well. This weekend I plan to spend a few hours on the grubby train looking for some more melodious content - this time though with a proper 3CCD camera, not a pocket job. "Part 3" coming up.

  • Cool little clip! Really nice color and sounds and vibe, especially considering it was shot with a tiny Exilim. Keep doing more! No need even for a 3CCD; any relatively recent handycam (including the single CMOS chip type) will give you great results if held steady and exposed properly. Aren't Jakarta trains amazing? :-)

  • Wow, I like this music. Asian music, mainly JPOP & JROCK is my main obsession these days. See my 1500 favorites :-). Nice to see you sharing this stuff on YouTube. I've wanted to come visit you in Indonesia & this intensifies that desire. Now, I have to watch all your other videos. Don't get discouraged like I did. It's all take & no 'give" on YouTube. Most people can't even bother to leave any comments.
