Springtime On The Village Green
The lilt of running water
with rushes for a screen.
Girls called Pam - strawberry jam -
Jugs of clotted cream.
Cricket on the greensward.
The snick of ball on willow.
Bodies splayed in silvan shade
A tussock for a pillow.
The twittering of children
from the rondelle in the park.
Throughout the sky the heady cry
of omnipresent lark.
The tantalising odour
from the bar of "Rose And Slipper"
Says "Come at once for Ploughman's Lunch
And a foaming draught of Bitter.
