Silverado Middle School Students Ask for America500 Birthday Proclamations

8th grade Leadership class at Silverado Middle School asks U.S. mayors to proclaim June or July 2008 World Geography Month for Who Named America Youth Literacy. Chairman Brad Wagenknecht of Napa County Board of Supervisors presents his proclamation, representing the goal of America500 Birthday Extravaganza (2007-2012) to energize 500 mayors in 50 states by acting locally to issue proclamations that increase knowledge for the nationwide astrategy

It begins with the question Who Named America? as a learning tool for opening local windows to worldwide learning, celebrating the 1507 Naming of America in planetary science when cartographer Martin Waldseemuller printed the first globe map to depict the new continent. This 15th Century projection of earth from space re-awakened humanity's understanding of earth, in honor of astronomer-mariner Amerigo Vespucci.
