"The Third Man" was one of the greatest
movie's ever made. It's theme was also
one of the largest selling songs of all time.
Anton Karas and his Zither had a #1 recording that year plus several others had it's with it totaling over 40 million in sales.
This recording, a vocal version of the song was number 22 but hardly anyone remembers it. It is done by the Victor Young's Orchestra and singer Don Cherry

  • Don Cherry has had a great career and is still going. Singing as great as ever. Don was a great golfer as well. Don and his wife Francine have a great website check it out at doncherry.us

  • @jplum Yes I've been to Don'e Web Site, very good. Don Cherry along with Tony Bennitt are about the last of the

big 50's Male Pop Singers left alive. Which is sad as they will never be music like that again.

  • Wow! What an obscure connection. Don Cherry and Harry Lime. Scary!

  • @ElegantEddie But Harry Lime made a lot more money from "Third Man" than Don Cherry did. Don was paid a grand total of $25,00 for recording this and his name wasn't even on the record label.

  • what year was the song?

  • @alexanuchid The record came out in 1950 and reached #22 on the charts but Don did not get cresit for it. The Victor Young Orch was on the label and Don who at that time was a nobody was paid only $25 for singing it. Later when he had recorded several hits of his own, later printings of the record included the name Don Cherry.

  • The lyrics were written by Walter Lord, the author of the Titanic classic "A Night to Remember."

  • As I said on Cherry's video for Thinking of You, he had a terrific pop singer's voice. Smooth, clear, and melodious.

  • @iolahicks

Yes Don sung this song along with "Mona Lisa" back in 1950 but never got credit for either. His name wasn't even on the lable. He was a young unknown singer and was hired by Victor Young to sing with his orch. for this one sechion when these two songs were recorded. Don was paid a grand total of $25 for his work. Both records charted that year. The next year Don made it big and his name suddenly appeared on these recordings but he still didn't make any more money off them.

  • I didn't know he sang this. Don lives in Vegas and his voice sounds beautiful as ever.... have met him and his wonderful wife, Francine....they are great people!!
