@nickpafras there are many marble mines all around the region and we know that many of them are coming from the ancient times. I think the name comes from that.

@rondar2 In Greek it is called "marmaron" which means "marble". It has been called that since ancient Greece. It is known to the ancient Greeks as "marmaron" because the when the light reflected on the water it made the water look like marble. Blame the politicians I always say. ;-)

It should not be that strange to you. Greeks have been living there forever. Marmara is a Greek word ;-)
