My thoughts on the scholarly debate over the Zemeckis'-directed, Gaiman-written movie. These are my thoughts on both the movie itself and the various historical and story problems that have been given rise to by the world of scholarly analysis of the movie. I'm not an expert but have taken multiple courses on the text so I think I know my stuff pretty well. Here are my further thoughts that couldn't fit in the video:

I just wanted to mention things I didn't have time to touch on or forgot to say. Firstly, I also don't think that the movie is even being unfaithful as the end of the movie implies that the story is all that lives on in history and one of the ideas of the movie is that reality is never as glamorous as it's retellings. So, in theory, this could feasibly be absolutely correct if fol tales are to be believed because the story passed down could have originated in a way similar to this. Secondly, I can't take ANY complaints
saying how this movie was sexist. At this time women were used only as "Peace-Weavers" so by comparison, this movie was progressive in that it had any female-centric content at all (I'm speaking of the part near the end with his other bedmate). Lastly, the time jump was not only necesarry but also an ingenious way of transitioning into the latter portion of the poem, which stands as a very different beast to the former half. I could say more but I don't have the room. =) Message me if you want to discuss further (anytime).

  • i actualy liked the changes,a ifter i saw beowulf and grendel i read the poem, one of the this i liked the most is tht the movie tried to include the three poems in the film, because in none of the other beowulf movies have shown him when he becomes a king or when he slains down the dragon. i know it wasnt like in the original poem.

another think i actualy loved from this, the movie show the true weacknes of the man in the moment he face temptation but how string is while persuit redeption

  • The major complaint I have about the movie is how easily, Beowulf submits to Grendel's mother. You would think some one who is so close to being a "man-god" as you put it would be able to resist a nice body and some complements to his reputation. I understand that in someways this makes the character more interesting, but it is completely different from the original text. The whole idea of Grendel being Hrothgar's son and the Dragon being Beowulf's son is just ridiculous. Whats your input?

  • Fully agree with you on the Score. Alan Silvestri has established himself as an excellent action/adventure composer. This and Van Helsing both had really awesome soundtracks.
