Have you ever seen Rockefeller Center more empty during the holidays? This is from early December 2005, when I inadvertently spent the night wandering the streets of Manhattan (I missed the last train and my host had already left). It was roughly 5 in the morning and I had the lights and the tree and the fountains and the snow all to myself. It was glorious. They say the city nevers sleeps, but I beg to differ. In less than an hour, the streets started to fill with traffic and pedestrians once more. But for a glorious half hour or so, I had New York to myself.

  • What a magnificent sight, but what time did you record the video? never been there without it being packed with people

  • It was about 5 am! That was what made it so magical...

  • I've lived in California my whole life and each year I barely see people enjoying the holidays or having the Christmas spirit. I think it's because it doesn't snow in California and it's always sunny. So is it true that people in the east coast (especially in New York) are always filled with joy and Christmas spirit around the holidays?

  • Wow- that's a really general question. I would say that most people are trying very hard to be filled with joy and the Christmas spirit but don't always attain it. Despite how pretty snow looks, it can make ordinary tasks (going to work, keeping warm) a lot harder and sometimes we get grumpy. But more often than not, Christmas Day itself is like you see in all the movies- snow outside, a bright tree, a mug of something warm to drink, and people you love.

  • I really want to know if people are filled with Christmas spirit and joy around the holidays in New York (the Rockefeller Center). Is it snowing now? I really need to know because I'm planning to fly there before Christmas Eve.

  • I couldn't tell you if there's snow in NYC right now because I live upstate (Rochester). But there's plenty of snow here!
