Roger Sanders will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about planar speakers. His ESL speakers are relatively small, look nice, and sound very "clean".

  • First; you've made many excellent, innovative products in my opinion and I agree with many of your observations.

All speakers will become directional at a certain point with rising frequency, and whether diffuse or directional, IMO the important thing is that the dispersion pattern is as uniform as possible throughout the frequency range because you hear so much of the room. Unlike a box, at least planar speakers are symmetric about one axis which improves the power response in a room.

  • I've thought the same way about the speaker/room interface for decades. This is a key reason why the original Quad ESL 57 sounds so coherent and transparent.

  • the reflections in the room are why i usually like to listen nearfield to my dynamic speakers. I do own a pair of full range electrostatic speaker from Acoustat model X with its own hybrid amps that I modified.

Never really heard anything better but I do like the Sound Labs.

  • As mentioned, wide dispersion causes many problems in average listening rooms. B&W just refuses to believe that physics applies to their products in this regard.

  • Read his book a few times :D
