The film is set in 1937 in Nanjing, China during the Nanking Massacre, at the time of the Second Sino-Japanese War. A group of escapees, finding sanctuary in a Church compound, risk their lives as they struggle to survive the plight and persecution brought on by the violent invasion of the city. Christian Bale portrays John Magee, an American priest who helps a number of Chinese escape certain death.

This film was chosen as China's submission to the 84th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, and I hope it wins. I love Zhang Yimou with a passion. Definitely one of my biggest personal influences. The Flowers of War is slated for a December 16th, 2011 release in China. No release date for the U.S. has been made yet but I assure you we will get it as Bale is the leading actor.

This film is based on the book The 13 Women of Nanjing by Geling Yan.

Enjoy!

  • Ways That Are Dark ~The truth about China Ralph Townsend

If a jury of the most experienced Americans or Englishmen in China today were asked to name the most prominent characteristic in the Chinese mentality as opposed to our own, I think most if not all of them would unhesitatingly answer, “lying." In the West we scarcely know anything about lying. We are rank amateurs.

  • and, does anyone really think that history = truth? don't be naive and think about it, history are always biased. Laden never gonna teach his children history using American history book. you gatta have your own judgement on it.

  • why you guys sense vengeance in this movie? you even watched it? tell me if there is any rage in the aside voice of the girl? sound like she want to kill them all? im chinese, honestly, i don't like japaness, but if i am in John's position, and those girls are japaness, i will also try my best to protect them. war makes some lose their souls and makes others find it. in over 5000 years history of china, have we never invade any nations? have we never lose our souls? we never massacred anyone?

And if the Chinese were to go to war I think they would not pick on japan as there are plenty bigger fish over the pond that seem intent on provoking China to declare war. The Japanese actions won't be forgotten by the Chinese but I'm sure most are over this now and don't see japan as a threat. I think they would rather look into actual matters that need to be attended to now rather than mulling over something that they can't change for the sake of revenge.

Wow matey you need to come outta that cave and read a little further into the history, the beastality and cruality the japanese soldiers displayed in Nanking is far from as sugar coated as you think it to be. On the other hand the the japanese making the nazi's look looks like saints is very debatable as I'm sure many thing went on in the Concentration camps that many people to this day do not know about.

  • @GeneralMing1 just want to correct one thing. you said 80% of young people in China are think about revange. Actually, 99% of older people hate Japs even more than young people. Because some of them experience that history by them self, or their family members. I still don't understand why there are some people say that Nanking Massacre is fake. do those who say this dare go to Nanjing now? Try!

  • @AKATSUKISTA Dear friend, you batter know the truth, that 80% of young people in China are thinking about ravange to japan for a long time, you had better go to church and pray for a good Chinese gorvernment. Because if there is a problem in china after the commis ass be kicked(I believe it will be happen in the next 10 to 20 years), and the new gorvernment has no way to deal with that, they may choose a guy just like Adolf hitler and to declear war, in addition, japan will be the best target.
