Surfers Paradise International Raceway was located at Carrara about 6 km, or just under 4 miles, South West of the more recent Surfers Paradise 'Indycar' street track. The circuit, designed and built by Keith Williams, a motor racing enthusiast, was opened in 1966 and included a drag strip on the pit straight. In it's debut season the Rothman's 12 hour was won by Jackie Stewart and Andrew Buchanan at the wheel of a Ferrari 250LM. In 1968 Surfers Raceway hosted a round of the Tasman series for the first time. Quite a few names GPL drivers will know, names such as Clark, Hill, Courage, Hulme and Rodriguez, became acquainted with it's very fast and flowing layout. At the end of the weekend Clark and Hill had scored a one-two for Lotus. The Australian Grand Prix visited Surfers Racewway just once, in 1975. In a torrential tropical downpour Max Stewart took his Lola T400 Formula 5000 to victory over John Leffler

This version of the track is accurate for the era but there are some details that changed during the period. For instance, sometime during the 70's the guardrail after the bridge was removed, either due to damage or possibly to create some run-off area with the fast increasing speed of cars. A famous incident occurred during a round of the Australian Touring Car Championship in 1984 when Allan Moffat, racing an RX7 in the wet, was nudged at full speed under the bridge. His car leaving the track and hitting a tree. Moffat later recounted "I was hanging onto the steering wheel, and when I hit the tree, the wheel bent all the way forwards into the dash." This same corner also provided Warwick Brown his 'Lola limp', and was later to see the demise of Tony Edmonston's Chev engined Alfa GTV Sports sedan.

After years of neglect, and in an effort to "quieten the neighbourhood", developers purchased the land and put a stop to all motorsport. In 2003 the circuit was destroyed for once and for all, and has since been redeveloped as Emerald Lakes canal estate.
