  • Thank god for progress. The sound on these things - albeit curious in nature, and more so now only for their overwhelming outdatedness - make me cringe. I can feel the tension building up with every phrase 'till I must shake and shudder to prevent having convulsive neck spasms.

  • @clairannette Try yoga.

  • Finally, a recording of Eric Hoeprich playing a reconstruction of Anton Stadler's basset clarinet in A. The Mozart Clarinet Concerto in it's truest form.

  • @papoocanada: no, it's a bassett clarinet (in A), not horn - that's lower and bigger again (in F).

  • A famous violinist said "why ride a horse when you can drive a car?" ... another famous violinist asked "well what if you need to jump a hedge?" ... That's why we have period-instruments orchestras... and there's no turning back .... ♥ ^-^

  • Its called a basset horn ( cor de basset ) tuned in F, Mozart scored often for it in his operas and other pieces, particularly his Requiem which contains 2. This is a copy or an original instrument of the times. It has a delightfully tenebrous sound. Richard Strauss has revived the instrument in its modern version and has scored for it in most of his operas - 2 of the buggers in ELEKTRA !

  • i must agree with clairannette-mozart was very much a foward thinker and utilized the best instruments at his disposal. Now that we have made so many improvements, why go back and try to recreate the 18th century sound? i believe we can get a far superior product by performing his music on the best modern instruments we have...my ears can't deny the difference

  • it's about $7000 dollars

  • This handmade Basset Clarinet must cost a fortune !

  • what kind of clarinet is this? is it still a Basset Clarinet? i've never seen one like this. its tonal qualities and timbre is amazing

  • Fantastic job!
