Always nice to hear this music--but, like just about anybody trying to recreate the Kenton sound--this band just doesn't put the drive into it that Kenton did. The key change doesn't help, but this is too laid back, especially in the ensemble work.

Yes, you are right. That was an arrangement edited by Lennie Niehaus especially for educational use. The CMJO did play the original version at the International Association of Jazz Educators Conference in Chicago in 1997, with guest conductor, Robert Curnow.
