Tatiana Gutsu performs her balance beam routine in the semi-final round of the 1992 World Championships. She qualifies third into the event finals behind Betty Okino (USA) and Tatiana Lysenko (CIS), but does not compete in the event finals because the reigning World Champion on beam, Svetlana Boginskaya (CIS), was given automatic qualification into the event finals. Gutsu was, therefore, the third-qualifying Soviet gymnast into the event finals.

  • and why she didn´t compete in other finals? like uneven bars

  • Gutsu competed in the Preliminary round of competition in UB, BB, and FX. She failed to advance to the Semi-Finals in UB and FX, placing 48th in UB and 30th in FX. She did, however, qualify 1st in BB.

Ironically, her teammate Roza Galieva qualified to the Semi-Finals in UB, BB, and FX, placing 2nd in UB, 3rd in BB, and 4th in FX after Prelims. However, she was unable to compete in the Semi-Finals due to a sudden illness. Galieva alleges she was poisoned by a teammate...

  • If Galieva was competting for CIS, then I wonder who might have done that, maybe Gutsu, since she stole her AA spot later on...Or was she competiting for Uzbekistan?

  • Galieva was competing for CIS.

  • Why didn't she compete in finals? Thanks for posting vids from this meet. Keep 'em coming! :-)

  • Her teammates Tatiana Lysenko and Svetlana Boginskaya qualified ahead of her. Boginskaya had an automatic qualification into the event finals as the reigning World Champion on beam from the previous year. Lavinia Milosovici and Oksana Chusovitina also benefited from this "free pass" into the event finals (in their respective events). Gutsu was a victim of this rule and the two-per-country rule.

  • In my opinion, this is the most difficult beam routine of all time, regardless of the change in requirement

  • Since when did the reining WC's on events get a free pass to the finals?

  • Remarkable dismount; why nobody does this today???

  • @lostlyrarose - who knows BUT judging by other guys comments on here Roza had a history of complaining.........from the judging to the crowds!

  • @KimZfan Wow, is Galieva crazy or is there some truth to that?

  • this routine probably would beat shawn johnson's in d score today!

  • @TuesdayPillow Seems to be common of Russian gymnasts. Like Khorkina!

  • Yeah, like she blamed the judges in Atlanta for favoring the American Gymnast. Thats when Russia had 3 or 4 falls.

  • yes, getting poisoned by a teammate looks like a soap-opera to me.

  • Unfortunately, Galieva has a history of blaming all her misfortunes on everyone else.
