Recorded 1966
What Neil had to say about this song: Solitary Man was written in my house in Massapequa, Long Island and was inspired by the minor-key of the Beatles song Michelle, which I loved. Solitary Man convinced me I'd always been this quiet, introverted kid. Then one of my fellow 6th grade graduates came backstage recently and showed me our 6th grade graduation book. I was shocked to be reminded that I had been voted Most Cheerful. That totally shook my whole concept of what I was like as a child. I thought I was a loner and it turns out I was probably a cheerleader. On the other hand, Cheerful Man wouldnt have sounded as good.

  • A favorite that failed to make the top forty in '66. Re-released in 1970 it made it to #21.

Though this is not the original (mono only), I'm glad I found it. This is one of a number of "material added" releases over the years. I'm thinking this is about the 4th rework of the song. It uses a the mono song (with alternate vocal track, not the original) And adds new material to get left/right seperation. The guitar, horns and female background vocals were all dubbed in. Thanks to poster...

  • @jerrylynnmonk Thanks so much for the information. This track is from 'Classics: The Early Years' (1983). It is the keyboard in it that stands out to me. The Bang recording is on the 'In My Lifetime' album and while I like them both, this one is my favorite.

  • My all-time favorite Neil Diamond song! I'm going to share this in honor of Neil's entry into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame alongside Alice Cooper and the Beastie Boys -- now if only they'd get around to inducting Marc Bolan, sigh...

  • I love Neil Diamond as a great talent. I favored a great many of his songs; however, this is my NUMBER ONE ALL TIME FAVORITE Neil Diamond songs. My brother and were discussing his music this weekend; his favorite is Forever In Blue Jeans - another excellent song that I love as well. Quite a talent! Great Post.
